Associate in Wilderness Medicine

On June 24th PNW Street Medics posted, in our Facebook Group, about the Wild Med Associate in Wilderness Medicine program. We are repeating that post this morning to highlight the value of this training - especially for medics working in wilderness areas, such as supporting the Ada'itsx/Fairy Creek Blockade.

Associate in Wilderness Medicine is a certificate program from the University of Utah School of Medicine. (https://www.awls.online/associate-in-wilderness-medicine)

Benefits include a level of competency in wilderness medicine education from a trusted medical school. This will allow you to teach others and further the knowledge of wilderness medicine and help people to stay safe and healthy as they explore this beautiful world.
Requirements are to pass the following exams.

You must complete at least one of the following:

* AWLS certification
* BWLS certification
* WFR certification

Then you must pass each of these exams

* Backpacking Medicine exam
* Search and Rescue exam
* Wilderness Travel and Tropical Medicine exam

To Start, you simply begin your studies. Register for each exam and you will be given the passcodes to take the examinations. When you have passed these exams, keep track of your scores, then click on the I have Finished icon to obtain a password to print your certificate. Then click on the Print Your Certificate icon and follow the instructions. A certificate will be emailed to you at that time.

While University of Utah does charge a small exam fee ($20-$40) if you want CME and a certificate for these courses, you can study the material for free - and if you can pass the practice exams, you will pass the paid exam (they are the same). We recommend the Associate in Wilderness Medicine for all PNW Street Medics, and for anyone who spends a lot of time in the wilderness.
