Secure Messaging for Street Medics

Dr. Hakan Geijer discussed Secure Messaging in *Riot Medicine* (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C91QZSQ5) saying "So far as information security goes, secure messaging is probably the most important for medics, and luckily is is also the easiest to use correctly."

PNW Street Medics use Signal Messenger (https://www.signal.org/) for communication between group members. All communications on Signal---including one-to-one messages, group messages, file transfers, photos, voice calls, and video calls---are end-to-end encrypted. Only the people involved in the communication can see them. The encryption happens between the individual devices using Signal.

This article - "The 15 Best Secure and Encrypted Messaging Apps in 2023"  (https://privacysavvy.com/security/mobile/secure-messaging-apps/) discusses other secure messaging apps. To be effective, everyone in your group needs to be using the same secure messenger. Choosing which messenger app best meets your group's security needs is something to determined based on your threat model.
